I'll be posting highlights from the day as well as information about ongoing events here. I'll also share ways you can participate even if you don't have a local SFD 2025 event. Want more in depth chatter about Software Freedom Day? Join the #SoftwareFreedomDay channel on Matrix for live conversations.
If you or your group is participating in SFD 2025, please send me links to any multimedia you want to share related to your events. I'll be adding highlights from events this year to this page. Also, please post information about Software Freedom Day to the social media channels you participate in using the #SFD2025 and #SoftwareFreedomDay2025 hashtags. The DFF will boost any related posts they say with those tags.
Here's the opening talk for Software Freedom Day 2025. It's a video on the Early Beginnings of Software Freedom Day:
While the board members and teams have changed over the years, one thing has not. Our love of Free Software has remained a constant in all the SFD events over the years.
I'd like to start things off by offering some lists of Free Software resources. Feel free to share them with others.
Want to find out if there's a local Software Freedom Day event in your area? Check our map of events:

If you can't find a local event, there are also some virtual events going on and I'll be sharing links to them here:
https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/sfd/events/pbsfg-virtual-sfd-2025
Be sure to check back here for any other last minute information on events, online activities and FLOSS resources.
The rest of this post will be dedicated to sharing SFD groups' multimedia and FOSS resource related links.

This year again, Huion is generously supporting Software Freedom Day (SFD) by donating a Kamvas Pro 16 (4K), a Kamvas Pro 12 for the runner up and two Inspiroy Frego M tablets for the next best submissions in our creative challenge. The challenge invites participants worldwide to create a mascot for Software Freedom Day using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Entries must be submitted by October 20, 2025, and adhere to specific guidelines, including using only FOSS tools and sharing the source files under Creative Commons licenses.
Huion’s participation highlights their commitment to digital freedom and creativity, encouraging artists to explore and express these values through their art.
Did you participate in Software Freedom Day last fall? If so, you’ve probably heard about Huion supporting the event by awarding some fantastic prizes to artists who got creative with Free Software.
Janka from Hungary took home the first prize, while Deffy from the USA and Yue from Malaysia were our talented runners-up. Congratulations to all three of you!
Missed the competition this year? Don’t worry—keep an eye on the site, as we’ll be celebrating Software Freedom Day again in 2025. And who knows? There might be exciting new challenges waiting for you!
This is a long read - diving into the mechanisms that are undermining the Free Software movement and philosophy current days - and why it's important to gather and step up for these ideals.
Don't want to read it all? Sam organized Software Freedom Day for the very first time in 2024. And he had a different approach! Read further for his story!
