Celebrating Freedom Days: A Commitment to Digital Freedom

At the Digital Freedom Foundation, we believe in the power of freedom in the digital world. That’s why we proudly organize three cornerstone events every year: Software Freedom Day (SFD), Hardware Freedom Day (HFD), and Document Freedom Day (DFD). Each of these events addresses a critical aspect of digital freedom and serves as a rallying point for communities around the globe to advocate, educate, and innovate.

Why These Three Freedom Days?

  • Software Freedom Day (SFD): This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Software forms the backbone of our digital lives, and ensuring it remains open, accessible, and community-driven is essential to safeguarding innovation and user rights.

  • Hardware Freedom Day (HFD): While software is vital, it’s meaningless without the hardware to run it. HFD emphasizes the need for open hardware, which allows for transparency, repairability, and innovation without vendor lock-in.

  • Document Freedom Day (DFD): Our digital communications and records rely on documents. DFD champions the use of open standards to ensure documents remain accessible and usable, regardless of the tools or platforms used to create them. For this event, we’ve partnered with The Document Foundation to strengthen our efforts and reach a wider audience.

These three days are deeply interconnected. For instance, hardware freedom doesn’t make sense without software freedom; after all, open hardware needs trustworthy software to operate. Similarly, document freedom hinges on software that respects open standards, ensuring that documents are treated fairly and remain accessible for years to come.

What About Other Freedom Days?

While SFD, HFD, and DFD are our core events, we recognize that they don’t cover every aspect of digital freedom. In the past, we’ve celebrated other Freedom Days, such as:

  • Education Freedom Day (EFD): Advocating for free and open educational resources.

  • Culture Freedom Day (CFD): Highlighting the importance of free culture and creative commons.

We’re also exploring new possibilities to address emerging challenges in the digital realm, such as:

  • AI Freedom Day: Focusing on ethical AI, transparency in algorithms, and democratizing AI technologies.

  • Journalistic Freedom Day: Promoting responsible journalism, media freedom, and countering misinformation in the digital age.

  • Identity Freedom Day: Highlighting the importance of privacy and self-sovereignty in the digital world.

Why We Need Your Help

As much as we’d love to champion every cause, our current team can’t take on all these events with the same level of commitment. That’s why Software Freedom Day is our biggest and most celebrated event. For Document Freedom Day, we’ve teamed up with The Document Foundation to share the workload and maximize impact.

If you feel a certain event is important in the digital realm and would like to help set the wheels in motion, we’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re an individual, company, or organization, here are a few ways you can get involved:

  1. Get in Touch: Share your ideas with us if you’d like to collaborate on a new event or suggest improvements to existing ones. By teaming up, we can achieve much more.

  2. Make Suggestions: Join the discussion on our Matrix channel and let us know what movements you think deserve more attention.

  3. Sponsor an Event: Help us shine a spotlight on specific issues by sponsoring a Freedom Day event.

Why Every Freedom Matters

At its core, the idea of “Freedom Days” is about empowering individuals, communities, and societies to take control of their digital lives. Whether it’s through ensuring software and hardware freedom, advocating for privacy, or fostering open education, each freedom contributes to a larger ecosystem of trust, accessibility, and innovation.

By working together, we can create a future where every aspect of the digital world remains open, equitable, and free for everyone. Let’s celebrate freedom—today, tomorrow, and every day!
