Software Freedom Day Cagayan de Oro
We are located at Cagayan de Oro, the City of Golden Friendship, in the Philippines.
Here is a quick rundown of what transpired during the last Software Freedom Day 2023 Cagayan de Oro hosted at the MakerSpace by The Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology (CET) of The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) last September 16, 2023.
The CET was introduced by its current Head, Mr. Diogenes Armando D. Pascua, and gave a brief tour of the Center's activities, facilities, features, and goals in terms of technology and entrepreneurship development.
The Organizing Lead for this year's Software Freedom Day 2023 Cagayan de Oro, Mr. Romar Mayer Micabalo, gave an introduction to SFD and the significance of open source. He also gave a quick historical glimpse of the various open source advocacy efforts through the years, and giving a nod to the OG of local tech community - the Kagay-anon Linux User's Group (KLUG), and also gave a rundown of the current breed of local tech communities.
Mr. Jay Ginete shared a set of powerfully awesome tools that can be added to your Python tooling.
Mr. Aryan Limjap gave a walkthrough of working with HAM radios, of hunting satellites and radio signals while using fully open software and hardware.
Mr. Edmund Madrid Salcedo, Jr. shared his favorite open source tools tying together two of his beloved interests - 3D design, and drones.
Video greetings from Mr. Jurgen Gaeremyn who is a Board Member of the Digital Freedom Foundation based in Belgium, and greetings from Mr. Robert Reyes, Community Head and Country Representative for Mozilla Philippines were also showcased during the event.
All in all, the recent Software Freedom Day 2023 Cagayan de Oro was a resounding success, albeit a simple and sentimental affair.
We are truly thankful for the unwavering support by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) headed by Mr. Diogenes Armando Pascua for the venue. Many thanks also go to the local tech communities and volunteers who continue to do what they do in order to grow tech advocacy, and the promotion of open systems within the community.
