Shantou - 汕头市

Shantou ([Chinese]: 汕头; [Chinese]: 汕頭; [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinyin|pinyin]: Shàntóu; ~-Mandarin pronunciation: -~[[ʂan˥˩tʰoʊ̯˧˥]]; [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POJ|POJ]: Sòaⁿ-thâu; also historically known as Swátōw or Suátao) is a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City|city] of 4,971,000 permanent inhabitants (as at end 2006) in coastal Eastern [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guangdong|Guangdong], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China|China], occupying an area of 2,064 km^2^. With it and the immediately surrounding cities of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jieyang|Jieyang] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaozhou|Chaozhou], the metropolitan region – known as [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaoshan|Chaoshan] – covers an area of 10,404 km^2^, and had a permanent population of 13,139,800 at the end of 2006.

Shantou, a city significant in 19th-century Chinese history as one of the [ports] established for Western trade and contact, was one of the original [Economic Zones] of the [Republic of China] established in the 1980s, but failed to blossom like other cities such as [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenzhen|Shenzhen], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiamen|Xiamen] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhuhai|Zhuhai]. However, it remains as Eastern Guangdong's economic centre, and is home to [University], a member of the “[211]” group.
