Lanzhou 兰州

Lanzhou ([Chinese]: 兰州; [Chinese]: 蘭州; [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinyin|pinyin]: Lánzhōu; [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wade-Giles|Wade-Giles]: Lan-chou; [map spelling]: Lanchow) is a [city] and capital of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gansu|Gansu] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Province_of_China|province] in northwestern [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China|China].

Lanzhou is situated on the upper course of the [River], where the river emerges from the mountains. It has been a center since early times, being at the southern end of the route leading via the [Corridor] across [Asia]. It also commands the approaches to the ancient capital area of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang'an|Chang'an] (modern [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xi'an|Xi'an]) in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaanxi|Shaanxi] province from both the west and the northwest, as well as from the area of [Lake] via the upper waters of the Yellow River and its tributaries.
